Double-Page Spread First Draft

For my double-page spread, I didn't want to just use one image as I felt that I had too many that I wanted to use. Also, having only one image on the double-page spread is very conventional and I wanted to do something unique. Therefore, I used lots of different images of my artist, all with different poses and different angles and framings. I also used bright coloured overlays on my images to make it vibrant, interesting and attractive for the reader.

In the images I have used my artist looks happy and also serious/sophisticated. I chose this images to connote not only that she is a hard-worker and wants to be taken seriously in the industry, but to also connote that she is a happy and relatable individual who is just like everyone else.

I have made the boxes around the page numbers red because red is one of the colours in my house style.

My Second Photoshoot

After a 1-2-1 with Becky, I decided to retake my photos for my front cover.
Here are some of the best photos I got.

First Draft Teacher Feedback

After a 1-2-1 with my teacher, I decided to I want to my front cover as I am not happy with it.

Some of the issues we found with it was;

- A house style needs to have 3 colours
- The page looks very crowded, there are too many feature stories
- The text is all very similar, I need to experiment with different fonts
- The main image gives more of a "student" feel than "indie-pop artist", I need to retake my images
and think more about costume and mise-en-scene
- The plug is too big
- The opacity level of the footer makes it quite difficult to read
- The main feature story needs to stand out better against the rest of the page

Front Cover First Draft

Making My Front Cover

1) First I removed the background from my main image using the eraser and magic wand tool.

2) I added the skyline and footer.

3) I then added the masthead, issue date, issue number, barcode and price.

4) I then added the main feature story and pull quote from it.

5) I then added the feature stories.

6) I then added the plug for my magazine.

Experimenting With Colour

I started off creating my front colour in the same purple used in my google mock-ups. However I feel like it did not fit my genre. Therefore, I have tried having my main colour being pink, purple and black.

PINK

PURPLE

BLACK

I believe that black looks the most professional and is most fitting to my genre.

Google Mock-up Ideas

In preparation for making my own product, I did a mock-up of my ideas using images from Google.

FRONT COVER

I moved the plug because I felt like it looked better at the bottom of the page.

CONTENTS PAGE

This wasn't on my digital draft, but I decided to add a caption to my main image so that the reader knows where to find the main feature story.

DOUBLE-PAGE SPREAD

In my digital drafts for my DPS, I have put that I wanted to include secondary images down the side. However, when I was making my mock-ups they made the page look to squashed and crowded. Therefore this is something I am not sure if I am going to use now. When I make my own DPS, I will see what it looks like both with and without secondary images and see which one looks best.

Colour Scheme, Name and Feature Story Ideas

I chose the name 'Ambience' for my magazine because it is a music related word. Furthermore, ambience is usually described as 'background sound' however is still really important to the making of something, just like how a lot of the artists featured in my magazine will be 'in the background' because they're not that well known yet, however they still play a very important role in the music industry.
